Stitching on Watercolor Paper

"Rosie" stitched painting in progress

"Rosie" - 14x22 Mixed Media

This is a mixed media painting that I just finished.  I had this sketch in my sketch book for a while and every time I flipped threw it looking for ideas this face kept calling out to me. Paint me! Paint me!.  So I finally did.  I did a simple pencil line sketch on my 200lb. watercolor paper and then decided to take it to my sewing room and free motiion stitch the sketch.  The paper was initially coated with a thin layer of gesso on the top side before I stitched.  After the stitching I coated the back with gel medium to secure and reeinforce the stitching.  Then I continued to paint with fluid acrylics in more of a watercolor style, painting right over the stitching.  I dropped some alcohol into the wet acrylic paint for some texture and also added some cheese cloth collaged over some areas with gel medium.  I added more layers of paint until I was happy with it.  This could be framed under class but I think I will mount it onto a streched painted canvas.

22"x28" - Leaves, Mixed Media

This is another mixed media piece. Sorry the photo does not do it justice.  Was hard to photograph the metal.  This piece again includes stitching on watercolor paper with gold metallic thread, and gold metallic cording that is couched or machine stitched on to the paper.  Square pieces of brass shim that I hand embossed with various leaf shapes and stitched to squares of fabrics were then stitched to the watercolor paper.  The three metal pieces down the center were stitched with a spiral design embellished with alcohol inks and hand sewn beads then bent slightly in to an arch for a 3 dimensional effect and then stitched to the paper.  I then trimmed out the out side shape and mounted it on to a canvas that I had painted with acrylic paint.
